Pre-dating the fountain pen, Japanese would carry a portable writing set tucked into their obi (sash/belt) or attached to their obi with a cord. Known as a yatate it was used to write verse, letters, reports, paint, sketch, do calligraphy or…when away from home. The shape allowed for storage of a bamboo brush and an ink pot that would contain a wad of cotton or silk which absorbed the sumi ink. The user lifted the decorated lid of the inkwell which also opened the door for the brush to emerge from the stem when the back hook of the yatate was slightly raised. A few drops of water could be added to wet the ink if too dry, and the user was ready to write or draw.

Although many yatates were plain, the design of this one is lovely with the gourd and vines embellishing the stem and lid of inkwell. The square shape of the pot is beautifully crafted with a pierced design on the outside yet solid walls on the inside to keep the ink moist. Great patina consistent with age and use in reddish brown color. The yatate rests on 3 feet and there is no brush, but you could add your own.

Ink and pen nib not included.
